Wagons

During one of those periods long ago when due to various reasons we were unable to do much on 80097, a small group of us decided that it would be a good idea to find an alternative shorter term project to keep our volunteer work force busy.

A wagon restoration attempt fitted the bill nicely as we knew where we might be able to acquire a suitable vehicle at relatively low cost.

We approached the ELR board of directors with an offer for one of the two derelict oil tank wagons parked and forgotten at the furthest extreme of the “quarter mile” siding.

The result can be seen above. Here you can see members of the group presenting a framed photograph to the Managing Director of Spur Petroleum, a local oil company, who were kind enough to provide us with paint and materials for the project.

Since then our wagon fleet has steadily grown. We now own over 30 vehicles, the majority of which are in regular use on the ELR on engineering trains and demostration freights.

Demonstration freight trains are now regularly seen on the railway featuring both steam and diesel locomotives.

During one Summer before the ELR had opened up to Rawtenstall, The Bury Stanard Four Group decided to have a sponsored wagon push using Coal Hopper 690379. This helped use to raise funds towards the restoration of BR Standard Class 4 80097 2-6-4T.

The small team of Keith Savory, Peter Watson and John Greenhow maintain and refurbish our wagons.
