On 80097, the problem with the longtitudinal stays has now been resolved and work is progressing on the boiler. The forecast from the Dalgleish company is still for a July return.
Engineering work has now been completed on the High Fit wagon and this has now been moved from the workshop to have the floor fitted and final painting done.
We have welded some switch stays for the Rawtenstall signalling project for our friends in the S & T department.
The main recent activity has been the next stage in the restoration of the Bury Standard 4 Group’s Ivatt ‘Mogul’ class 2 mt steam loco 46428, fifty years after she retired from running on British Rail.
This involved the separation of firstly the boiler / firebox assembly and then the wheels from the loco frame and lifting them onto weltrol low wagons for future refurbishment. The engine frame was then craned into a location outside the BS4G workshop.
This involved using the ELR’s 130 ton mobile railway crane, manned by a team from their Motive Power dept. The loco had previously been prepared by removing all the boiler mounting bolts from the frame and freeing off all the wheel and axle assemblies. Our thanks to the ELR lifting team for all their efforts over two days.
The frame will now be stripped down for cleaning, replacement of worn and damaged parts and then rebuilt. Preliminary work has now started.
