Work Update

Friday, 20th February, 2015

Good progress has continued since the beginning of the year.

Mark and Colin are making great inroads into making the engine black. The side tanks, cab and bunker are now being flattened down and filled ready for a first covering of black paint.

Dave and Cliff have continued apace with all the intricate parts of the cladding. The back head cladding in the cab is now almost finished and ready for fitting to the boiler. Last weekend saw them deliver the two double curvature corner pieces for the front of the firebox. Their next job will be to make the pieces for the top and sides of the firebox.

Thanks to Alan Bibby we now have a cab with glass. Some has been fitted and the other will be done when needed.

Richard has been machining the steam brake lubricator housing ready to be brazed into position when the pipework is ready.

The cab has had further work done to it by Harry in the shape of the final fitting of the kick plates, cab doors and hand rails.

Other big jobs that are being finished are the damper control mechanism which required new pins, collars and welding to be carried out on it. We have also now finally assembled the regulator which sits in the steam dome. This is now ready for fitting as soon as it is needed.

On the financial front we must mention our shop staff who have worked hard over the last month, which included two Galas bringing in some much needed cash for the large bills that are starting to come in. One of which is the £2000 for the remaining copper pipework. On that note we would like to thank the Rochdale Model Engineers for passing on to us a bequest of £1000, for which we are extremely grateful. Our shop stocks a wide range of Model Railway Gear, DVD’s, Books and Magazines to cover all your railway needs. We welcome any donations to help us keep our shop well stocked but please make sure they are marked for the Standard 4 Group to ensure they go to the correct group.

The workshop is open every weekend between 10am and 4pm. Any new volunteers, anyone interested in joining us or anyone wishing to have a shed tour should call into the Bury Standard 4 Group shop, which is in our coach at the end of platform 2.
